What the Tax Alpha Dashboard Shows

FIELD GUIDE #019

What the FDL Tax Alpha Dashboard Shows

How to read visible tax value, filing result, and audit trace across FDL.

Tax Work Stays Invisible

A correction can be technically right and still difficult to explain, review, or defend.

FDL View
Tax Work Becomes Reviewable

FDL separates Tax Alpha Dashboard value, filing result, and audit trace.

FDL is not only trying to compute a tax result.

FDL separates what the correction protected, what hit the Tax Report, and what trace supports the result.

This field guide explains how to read the Tax Alpha Dashboard before reading the proof logs.

THE THREE SURFACES

Tax Alpha Dashboard

The surface where protected tax value becomes visible.

It shows what the correction protected.

Tax Report

The filing-facing result surface.

It shows proceeds, basis, adjustments, gain/loss, term, and source lot.

Audit Trail

The trace behind the number.

It shows why the result stands.

Term is surface-specific. Tax Report shows the filing-facing term of the realized sale. Audit Trail shows the lot-age / trace state, not the filing-facing Tax Report term.

WHY THIS MATTERS

UHNW taxable accounts do not fail only because one number is missing.

They fail when basis, filing result, and trace drift apart.

FDL is designed to keep those surfaces separate, visible, and reviewable.

Field Guide Rule

  • When reading a proof log, start with the Tax Alpha Dashboard for visible tax value
  • Read the Tax Report for the filing-facing result
  • Read the Audit Trail for the proof path

THREE DIMENSIONS OF TAX WORK

🛡️

Shield

Preserves defended value.

Examples include W-2 basis, wash sale basis preservation and recovery, corporate-action carryover, and ROC basis tracking.

⚔️

Sword

Shows controlled outcome delta.

Specific ID cases compare a prepared selected-lot result against the default FIFO path.

🧪

Alchemy

Preserves tax character over time.

Holding-period continuity is not summed with dollar alpha because it changes tax character, not just basis amount.

HOW TO READ THE TAX ALPHA DASHBOARD

The Tax Alpha Dashboard is read from left to right. Each bucket has a different job. Some buckets represent protected dollar value. Others preserve trace or tax character and are not summed into the same total.

Summed / not summed rule: Realized and Embedded totals include only summed dollar-value buckets. Trace and character buckets are shown for review but do not roll into the same total.

Bucket What it means How to read it
🛡️ W-2 Basis (§83) Already-taxed compensation basis carried into the lot record. Prevents RSU / vesting basis from disappearing from the filing result.
🛡️ Wash Sale Loss Preserve (§1091) Denied loss attached to replacement lots. Preserved value that has not yet been recovered.
🛡️ Wash Sale Basis Recovery (§1091) Previously preserved loss recovered when replacement shares are later sold. Turns deferred value back into a visible realized result.
🛡️ Wash Sale Loss Denied (§1091) [Not Summed] The currently denied loss created by wash sale treatment. Trace bucket. It is excluded from the alpha sum because it is not currently deductible.
🛡️ Wash Sale Strategic Arb. (§1091) Manual, path-specific bucket for user-led wash sale treatment outside FDL’s internal default logic. Not assumed in every case. Review carefully before treating as operational value.
🛡️ Corporate Actions Basis Carryover & CIL Basis continuity through stock splits, spin-offs, split-offs, mergers, and cash-in-lieu. Keeps carryover basis visible across corporate-action paths.
🛡️ ROC (§301) Return of capital reducing basis before sale. Makes basis erosion visible before liquidation or basis exhaustion.
⚔️ Specific ID (§1012) Difference between default FIFO and prepared selected-lot result. Shows controlled outcome delta, not a recommendation engine.
🧪 LT Tacking (§1223) [Not Summed] Holding-period continuity preserved across qualifying events. Not summed because it preserves tax character rather than dollar basis.

Reading rule: The Tax Alpha Dashboard number is not always the Tax Report number. The Tax Alpha Dashboard shows what the prepared correction protected, preserved, or made visible. The Tax Report shows the filing-facing result. The Audit Trail shows the trace behind both.

Tax Alpha Dashboard Value

  • what was protected
  • what default path was avoided
  • what value remains embedded
  • what tax character was preserved

Not the Same Surface

  • Tax Alpha Dashboard value is not always taxable gain
  • Tax Report rows are the filing-facing output
  • Audit Trail explains the source-lot logic
  • review requires all three surfaces

THE WHITE-BOX SYSTEM

FDL is built for prepared, in-scope taxable listed-equity workflows. It makes invisible tax work visible, shows defended value on the Tax Alpha Dashboard, and keeps the result verification-first, audit-ready, and commercially usable.

HOW TO READ A PROOF LOG

Start with the Tax Alpha Dashboard

  • Which bucket lit up?
  • Is the value realized or embedded?
  • Is the bucket summed or not summed?
  • Does the case show Shield, Sword, Alchemy, or ledger integrity?

Then Check the Result

  • What did Tax Report output?
  • Which source lot produced the row?
  • What stayed open in Audit Trail?
  • Does the trace support the Tax Alpha Dashboard value?

Example: in a Specific ID case, the Tax Alpha Dashboard may show a FIFO-vs-selected-lot differential. The Tax Report still shows the actual selected-lot sale result. The Audit Trail shows which lot left and which lot stayed.

WHAT FDL IS NOT

FDL is not tax advice.

FDL is not a replacement for CPA judgment.

FDL is not a recommendation engine.

FDL does not bless retroactive lot picking.

FDL does not promise universal raw broker-data normalization.

WHAT FDL IS SHOWING

FDL shows how prepared, in-scope tax-lot records move through the Tax Alpha Dashboard, the filing-facing result, and the audit trace.

Its value is not only the number.

Its value is making the number reviewable.
